Breaking the Ice With… Deborah Cocks

What’s rocking your world?

My impending home renovation and new kitchen! I am in awe of interior designers and builders.

What are you most excited about in your job this year?

I am most excited about the fact that Communities that Care Knox is resourced and supported by its members to enter into a second cycle of implementation. That takes:

  • a lot of vision to continue a strategy that aims to promote healthy social development for children in our community
  • belief in the model
  • support from members to make that happen.

I am also really excited to be working with the Parent Research Centre this year. They will be working with us to build the capacity of the Strengthening Families Steering group. In addition they will be teaching us about their latest research and evidence around what works best in supporting parents and families, and guiding the group to develop our strategy Strengthening Families in Knox.

Where would you like to see your work go? What’s your ambition?

My ambition is to demonstrate the value of Communities that Care as a successful model to reduce risk factors for young people so they have a chance to thrive.  I really want to impact on the culture and attitudes toward alcohol. The costs associated with alcohol use and misuse are so hefty and those resources could be used in much more productive ways such strengthening the education system, arts and culture, child development and supporting parents.

What do you want to be known for professionally?

That I am easy to work with, insightful and a good facilitator

In your job, what is something you are proud of?

I am really proud of maintaining a consistent partnership for Communities that Care Knox. The members are really wonderful people who are genuinely concerned for children and young people especially in relation to adolescent drinking. They really want children and young people to do well in their lives and understand that this model is a great opportunity to make change.

Who Inspires you?

I see inspiration everyday, everywhere. I love the power of nature. Humans are amazing in so many ways. Right now I am inspired by a 90 year old Welsh woman who started yoga at the age 60 and can do the splits! And Jacinta Ardern, The Prime Minister of New Zealand, who is showing us how to be a compassionate leader in politics. Love her!

What are three things on your bucket list

  • Travel always – Antarctica at some stage and this year eating lots of amazing Italian food in Sicily
  • Continue to learn more about yoga
  • Learn how to make bread and improve food presentation skills
